‘Criminalisation of Chhaupadi helped Nepal keep its commitment’

French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs

Kathmandu, August 11

France has said Nepal has kept its commitment made during its Universal Periodic Review at the United Nations in 2015, by criminalising Chhaupadi, a tradition practised in far-western and mid-western Nepal forcing menstruating women to stay out of house, into a shed during the period.

In a statement today, the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs says, “France reaffirms its commitment to combating all forms of violence and discrimination against women.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Parliament had endorsed the new Criminal Code, which has a provision that anyone forcing women to follow Chhaupadi will be sentenced three-month jail and Rs 3,000 fine.
