Court martial sentences runaway soldier to jail for 10 years

Kathmandu, August 1

Nepal Army’s court martial has sentenced a runaway soldier to jail for 10 years.

Shakti Gurung alias Bikram had run away with arms during the armed conflict 13 years ago. He had joined the Maoist army later.

Nepal Army spokesperson Bigyan Dev Pandey says Gurung will not be qualified for any government job in the future.

Gurung had run away from his workstation on August 15, 2006. Then, the national military force had filed a case against him as per the Military Act. Absconding Rana was arrested on July 23 this year. Investigators had then found that he was also taken away 450 bullets while running away.

Meanwhile, the Gurung family has complained that the sentence is not appropriate as the rebel forces have already joined the peace process. The Nepal Army, however, has clarified that the convict can file an appeal at the Special Court if not convinced with the sentence.
