Corruption unabated during lockdown: CIAA

File: Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA)

Kathmandu, May 8

The constitutional anti-corruption watchdog, Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, has said corruption seems to have continued unabated in the country during the lockdown imposed to control the coronavirus outbreak also.

The commission’s spokesperson Pradeep Kumar Koirala says the number of complaints received during this period is slightly higher than the average.

Last year, the commission’s central office in Kathmandu had received 821 complaints every month on an average. However, currently, the commission is receiving more than 250 complaints every week, according to Koirala.

He informs that most people have filed their complaints online and using social media platforms due to the travel restrictions.

Khem Raj Regmi, the president of Transparency International Nepal, an anti-corruption organisation, says officials with a corrupt mindset might have thought that they would not be scrutinised or opposed during this period. “But those seeing corruption closely might have sent the complaints.”
