Kathmandu, October 4
Nepali Congress Vice President Bishwo Prakash Sharma has said the issue of constitutional amendment should not be treated merely as a matter of parliamentary numbers.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Nepali Congress’ 15th General Convention at Khulamanch in Kathmandu on Sunday, Sharma said constitutional amendment should be approached as a matter of national concern.
He said the Nepali Congress would support the government if it moved ahead with constitutional amendment in an organised and mature manner, in line with the principles envisioned by the Constitution.
“Constitutional amendment should not become merely a matter of the desires of the ruling and opposition sides. It should not be reduced to a matter of arithmetic,” Sharma said.
He stressed that any process of amending or drafting constitutional provisions should go beyond parliamentary calculations and reflect broader national unity and public sentiment.
Sharma also urged the government to take into account the spirit and demands of the Gen Z movement, the Madhesh movement and the concerns raised by different groups and communities across the country while pursuing constitutional amendments.
He called on the government to ensure that the amendment process addresses these issues in a comprehensive manner.
