Community schools reopen, student enrollment begins

Kathmandu, May 2

After a month-long teachers’ protest, schools across the country have reopened starting today. The resumption follows a nine-point agreement signed between the government and the Teachers’ Federation on Wednesday.

Since Thursday is a public holiday, government school principals in Kathmandu said they have launched the student enrollment campaign from today. “New students have started coming for enrollment. We enrolled 80 new students just today,” said Rita Tiwari, Principal of Padma Kanya Secondary School. “It’s Book-Free Friday today, and students participated in extracurricular activities.”

Padma Kanya currently has about 500 students enrolled up to Grade 10.

Anil Jha, Principal of Janabikas Secondary School, also confirmed that classes have resumed. “Schools have reopened from today, and new students are coming in for enrollment,” he said. Last year, his school had around 450 students.

Bishnu Rimal, Principal of Gyanodaya Secondary School, echoed similar updates. “Students are arriving for enrollment,” she said. Gyanodaya had an enrollment of 4,700 students last year.

According to the Centre for Education and Human Resource Development, the student enrollment campaign has officially begun nationwide. However, due to the delayed opening of community schools, enrollment numbers have taken a hit compared to last year.

The new academic session officially began on mid-April, but the enrollment drive has only started 19 days later because of the protest.
