In the name of conducting its general convention, an organisation comprising employees of local bodies is seeking a whopping Rs 42 lakh from different government offices for organising its national convention.

In the manner of Biplav-led CPN-Maoist, Hari Kumar Shrestha, chair of Local Body Employees’ Association,  has written to these offices, seeking the sum for holding the fourth general convention of the association.

The letter bearing Shrestha’s signature reads: Local Body Employees’ Association was formed to provice service to the people in an easy and effective way. The association is holding its fourth general convention on Magh 8 and 9 (January 21 and 22). There will be around 1,070 people at the convention — 850 representatives, 120 observers and 100 guests.

The association has stated that it will require around Rs 42 lakh to foot food, transport and accommodation bills. It has asked government offices to provide funds for the same.

In the 1990’s, political parties started the practice of giving donations to government employees’ organisations, established for doing politics, through government agencies.

However, it’s not only government employees’ organisations that seek donation from government agencies to hold their conventions. Different ‘pro-people’ organisations also seek government funds for organising their jamborees. This practice is on the rise.
