CIAA raids metropolitan city office, seizes Hilton papers suspecting something fishy

Kathmandu, February 9

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority on Thursday raided the office of Kathmandu Metropolitan City and seized the papers of the under-construction Double Tree Hilton Hotel.

The CIAA team also inspected the hotel construction site.

The raid comes in the wake of the parliamentary Good Governance and Monitoring Committee’s charges that KMC gave permission for hotel construction in a haphazard manner. The committee is also investigating the case. A CIAA source said they seized the hotel’s documents on the suspicion of financial irregularities in the construction of hotel.

About a month ago, while hotel construction was in progress, the Naxal-Bhagwati Bahal road, which is close to the site, caved in. The road remains shut for vehicles to date. Houses close to the site have developed cracks and locals have been demanding action against the construction company — Jagdamba Hospitality. The company faces charges that it has not conducted an environment impact assessment before embarking on the ambitious project.
