Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana says he will not resign from his position despite widespread demands for the same from stakeholders including his predecessors and fellow justices at the Supreme Court.

Of late, the stakeholders have demanded that Chief Justice Rana resign from his position as he has been accused of partnering with the executive on various occasions during the premiership of KP Sharma Oli and Sher Bahadur Deuba.

With the same demand, a majority of the apex court justices, who have refused to hear cases for the past few days to put pressure on the chief justice, met Rana this morning. But, Rana told them he would not resign just because people from the streets demanded this.

He said other justices have also been dragged into the controversies, and only one resigning would not be fair. “If all involved in the dispute resign, that can be thought of,” he reportedly said, “If not, you cannot resign just because there’s a demand from the street.”

He stressed the constitution has stipulated a certain provision for the chief justice’s appointment and termination, and he would abide by that.
