Chinese nationals arrested for their engagement in China, not Nepal: Investigators

Some of the Chinese nationals arrested in Kathmandu on Monday, December 23, 2019.

Kathmandu, December 24

Investigators in Nepal Police say they arrested 122 Chinese nationals from different places of Kathmandu on Monday, not because of their involvement in suspicious activities in Nepal. They claim that it was a part of an inter-country police operation and the suspects were held for their suspicious activities in their own country.

Therefore, the arrestees will be deported to China once the preliminary investigation will be over, the officials say.

An investigation officer tells Onlinekhabar that the suspects were involved in various activities in China that amount to cybercrime. They were renting various houses in Kathmandu to run their illegal businesses.

“We had been informed that many others were also involved in such activities, but only these people were arrested now,” he says. Chinese security and diplomatic officials had informed the police about the suspects.

In the preliminary phase, the investigators are checking if their activities could be considered a crime in Nepal also. In that case, they will face charges in Nepal too. Otherwise, they will be sent back to China.

However, Nepal has not signed an extradition treaty with the northern neighbour. Therefore, the Department of Immigration has to make a decision to deport them first. “The Chinese officials have proposed sending a chartered aircraft to bring them back,” a source says.
