Baglung pond bursts, destroys Mid-Hill Highway

The water of Turture pond outflows after heavy rainfall in Baglung district, on Monday, August 5, 2019.

Baglung, August 5

The Turture pond in Baglung district has burst. The overflowing water has destroyed the Mid-Hill Highway.

The lake was formed in the monsoon last year in Badigat rural municipality-7 and Dhorpatan municipality-1 after a landslide blocked the waterflow of a local river. This is the first outburst since then.

After the incident at around 2 am this morning, the transportation via Mid-Hill Highway has been obstructed.

Local tourism entrepreneurs had been operating boats in the pond since the monsoon last year. Local journalist Kamal Paudel says the water level in the pond is decreasing, and houses and farms submerged in the water last year have been seen.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged locals of Bhimgithe, Khara and Kharbang of Baglung and Bhuwachidi, Majuwa Chorkote, Ullikhola and Ridi of Gulmi to stay alert against the possible flooding.
