Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and destruction caused by the devastating floods in Nepal during a telephone conversation with Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah.
Describing the disaster and its destruction as “tsunami-like”, Albanese said Australia stands with Nepal during the difficult period and is committed to providing necessary assistance.
Albanese shared details of the conversation on social media, saying he had spoken with Prime Minister Shah and conveyed Australia’s deepest condolences following the disaster.
“Today I spoke with Nepal’s Prime Minister Shah to express Australia’s deepest condolences following the devastating floods and tsunami-like disaster,” Albanese wrote.
He said Australia was providing humanitarian supplies, equipment and specialised capabilities to areas where they were most needed.
“The loss of life and physical destruction caused by this disaster is heartbreaking,” he said. “We are providing humanitarian supplies, equipment and specialist capabilities to affected areas.”
Albanese also said Australian nationals had gone missing following the floods and that efforts were continuing to locate them.
He expressed his sympathy and condolences to the families and relatives of Australians who remain unaccounted for.
The floods have caused widespread loss of life and extensive damage across parts of Nepal, with search, rescue and relief operations continuing in the affected areas.
