Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed deep sorrow over the devastation caused by the recent floods in Nepal and pledged continued Australian support for rescue and reconstruction efforts.
Albanese made the commitment during a meeting with Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen, in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
Sharing details of the meeting on social media, Albanese said Australia stands with the Nepali people during the disaster.
“Today at the UN, I met with Prime Minister Balen Shah and expressed Australia’s deepest condolences to those affected, and provided an update on Australia’s assistance efforts to date,” Albanese said.
Albanese also referred to the fact that several Australian citizens remain missing following the floods, saying his thoughts are with their families and loved ones.
He pledged that Australia would continue working closely with Nepal to provide assistance wherever it is most urgently needed.
Prime Minister Shah, who is in New York to attend the UN General Assembly, has begun holding meetings with heads of state and government from various countries on the sidelines of the gathering.
