Attorney General tells govt to improve jails across country

Kathmandu, May 14

Attorney General Agni Kharel has said the government needs to improve the condition of jails and juvenile detention centres across the country.

Kharel informs that his office recently monitored jails and juvenile detention centres of 24 districts of the country and found out that the facilities these were not appropriate for ‘a humane treatment’ to the detainees.

Organising a press conference at his office in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Kharel also said the capacity of jails should increase as many of them had been congested for the prisoners.

“For example, the Pyuthan District Prison can house only 15 persons, but there were 58 persons living. After our monitoring, 10 persons have been reportedly transferred to other places.”

He stated that his office already forwarded the recommendations to concerned government offices.

In another context, Kharel demanded that his office and government attorney’s offices across the country are suffering from an acute human resource crisis, demanding that the government make efforts to fill the vacancies.
