Attorney General is PM’s legal advisor constitutionally, but Oli appoints one more

L-R: Attorney General Agni Kharel and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s ‘legal advisor’ Baburam Dahal

Kathmandu, November 22

Constitutionally, the attorney general of the country is the official legal advisor of the government as well as the prime minister. However, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has appointed advocate Baburam Dahal as his legal advisor.

After the Cabinet meeting recently endorsed Dahal’s appointment, legal experts have questioned the rationale behind the appointment. Sources say Attorney General Agni Kharel is also baffled by the decision. It has been learned that Kharel expressed his concern with President Bidya Devi Bhandari and PM Oli during his recent meetings.

On the other hand, a group of some lawyers close to the ruling Nepal Communist Party expressed their dissatisfaction with Oli’s confidant and NCP parliamentary party’s deputy leader Subas Chandra Nembang.

After people close to the prime minister also criticised the decision, the Cabinet meeting held on Thursday ‘silently’ corrected the decision, according to sources. Now, Dahal will work as ‘a legal expert at the PM’s secretariat’ instead of an ‘advisor’.
