Around 2.5 million farmers have been enlisted in the Farmer Registration System of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Environment. The farmers were registered based on land and production details. Officer at the Agriculture Information Centre, Sanjeev Pandit, shared that the farmers were enlisted through an online system to provide necessary subsidies and facilities to increase production.
He mentioned that activities were underway to enlist the remaining more than 1.6 million farmers, as the population of farmers is 4.130 million people who depend on agriculture, as per the Agriculture Census, 2078. After listing all farmers, the ministry has set out a plan to classify farmers into four categories—subsistence farmers, small farmers, medium farmers, and large farmers, Pandit added, stating that identity cards would be distributed and that farmers would be connected to a digital information system after classification.
It would be easier for the government to provide various facilities, including grants, chemical fertiliser, seeds and service management on the basis of the farmer identity cards. Information and details of the farmers have been collected in coordination with local levels across the country. The Centre has also called the farmers to register their names in the programme.
