After Nepal Telecom decided to pull out of the Dharahara reconstruction project, the government itself is planning to begin the project.
Earlier, the telecommunication company had decided not to be involved in the project citing the government failed to assure security to its investment.
Now, the National Reconstruction Authority has submitted a proposal to the Cabinet seeking the authority to reconstruct the structure collapsed in the 2015 earthquake, informs Authority’s spokesperson Yamlal Bhusal.
“After the Cabinet makes a decision based on our proposal, we will begin the reconstruction. If any organisation shows its capacity for the project, we can handover the responsibility to them,” Bhusal says.
The government has already designed the model for Dharahara and estimated that the project would cost Rs 4 billion. But, the government plan had been pushed into limbo after the Telecom pulled out of the project.
The company had decided not to take the responsibility as the government did not agree on its proposal to construct a commercial shopping complete on the premises. It had assured that it was ready to invest as much as Rs 7 billion if the government accepted its proposal. However, the government side insisted that the premises should be left open.
