After sauna deaths, lawmaker demands regulation of fitness centres

National Assembly member Bimala Paudyal Rai speaks during an Upper House meeting

Kathmandu, February 2

After the death of a couple, while they were taking a sauna at a fitness centre in Lalitpur last week, a member of the National Assembly has demanded a strict regulation of such businesses.

Lawmaker Bimala Paudyal Rai today commented that the government did not have clear regulations about the fitness centres, arguing the recent incident should be an eye-opener.

“Who can open such fitness centres? Where are they registered? What are the standard and criteria?” she asked, “What is the qualification for their staff?” She urged the Minister for Health and Population Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal, who was present at the meeting, to introduce needful legal provisions and regulate the sector.
