A new power equation involving the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal, CPN-UML and the Nepali Communist Party is taking shape in Madhesh Province. Leaders say JSP Nepal is more likely to lead the government.
Saroj Kumar Yadav, the CPN-UML’s parliamentary party leader, said the three parties have already reached an understanding on forming a new government.
“The agreement among the three parties is almost finalised. A decision on which party will lead will be made soon,” he told Onlinekhabar.
He said the new alignment was discussed and agreed at the top level, among UML Chair KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Communist Party Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal and JSP Nepal Central Chair Upendra Yadav.
According to sources, it is almost certain that a JSP Nepal leader will become chief minister. Saroj Kumar Yadav, leader of JSP Nepal’s parliamentary party in Madhesh, is the most likely candidate.
The Nepali Congress-led government is currently in a minority, after the UML withdrew its support and left the Madhesh government on October 16. Chief Minister Krishna Prasad Yadav is trying to save his government.
Recently, there had also been talks about the UML returning to the same government. Congress President Gagan Thapa and UML Chair Oli held discussions for this purpose.
However, Oli did not agree, saying that rejoining a government it had withdrawn support from would send a negative message. Another alignment then took shape.
