The Supreme Court’s full court meeting, attended by all justices, has expressed serious concern over news reports published about the chief justice and other justices.

A statement issued after Monday’s meeting said the supremacy of the Constitution and the law remained the court’s unwavering conviction and commitment.

“The supremacy of the Constitution and the law is our firm belief and commitment. We remain steadfast and clear on this. We urge everyone to uphold the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law,” the statement issued by Supreme Court spokesperson Dr Ashok Kumar Chhetri said.

The meeting also urged the relevant authorities to conduct an impartial and independent investigation, in accordance with the Constitution and the law, into matters reported and broadcast publicly, and to make factual findings public as soon as possible.

“We are committed to fulfilling our legal accountability and extending cooperation, as required by law, in any investigation and inquiry conducted in accordance with the Constitution and the law regarding news published and broadcast by the media,” the statement said.

The full court said the judiciary was an institution founded on public trust and confidence. It urged the media not to publish or broadcast reports that could mislead the public and service recipients or have a negative impact on them.

It also called on the media not to blame anyone before the investigation is complete or publish reports that could obstruct the administration of justice.

The statement further urged judicial personnel working across all courts to continue their work as usual without being distracted by the published reports.
