Kathmandu, October 28
The Department of Tourism has urged tourists, trekkers and mountaineers to avoid high-altitude areas from October 28 to November 1, warning of heavy rainfall, snowfall and avalanches in mountainous regions.
According to a weather bulletin issued by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, several parts of the country could experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds during the period.
The adverse weather could increase the risk of floods, landslides and soil erosion, while mountainous areas could face snowstorms and avalanches.
Warning that the conditions could disrupt trekking and mountaineering activities, the Department of Tourism has advised people planning to travel to high-altitude areas to reconsider their plans. Trekkers and climbers already in the mountains have also been urged to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
The department has asked travellers to plan their journeys based on the latest weather updates issued by official authorities.
It has also appealed to relevant agencies to ensure the continuous and accessible availability of treatment for altitude-related health problems, particularly acute mountain sickness, at health facilities in mountainous destinations such as Khumbu and Manang, as well as in Kathmandu and Pokhara.
