Kathmandu, October 28
Cyclone Arnab has killed three people in India’s Andhra Pradesh. It has damaged 30 houses. Indian media reports that the cyclone has affected 714 villages in the state.
Arnab entered the coastal area of Andhra Pradesh on the morning of October 28, 2026. It brought strong winds and heavy rain. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the cyclone began making landfall near Kakinada at about 1:20 am today.
Rooftops have been blown off in various districts of Andhra Pradesh. Trees and electricity poles have fallen. Low-lying coastal areas are flooded. Strong winds and heavy rain are also hitting the southern districts of Odisha.
Paddy crops in the affected areas of India are underwater. Flood warnings have been issued for 167 villages.
Cyclone Arnab is weakening
The cyclone’s sustained wind speed reached 125 to 135 kilometres per hour. Gusts reached up to 150 kilometres per hour.
Wind speed has been falling since landfall. The cyclone was first downgraded from an “extremely severe cyclonic storm” to a “very severe cyclonic storm.” It is expected to weaken to a cyclonic storm by afternoon. By evening, it is expected to become a deep depression.
Nepal’s meteorologists forecast that clouds from the outer edge of the cyclone will reach Nepal. When they mix with a system in the upper atmosphere, rain and snowfall will follow.
Meteorologist Binu Maharjan of the Weather Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said signs of its effect will appear from today. From Thursday night, snow is likely in the high Himalayan region and rain in other places.
Moderate rain or snowfall is likely in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces. Heavy rain or snowfall is possible in one or two places, Maharjan said.
She urged people not to go to the high Himalayan region. Those who have already gone should come down to safe places. She also asked people to be careful in risk-prone areas.
