Kathmandu Valley faces possible power cuts for 2 days as NEA upgrades transmission line

Kathmandu, October 9

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is set to replace conductors on the Matatirtha-Syuchatar 132 kV transmission line to improve the reliability, quality and sustainability of electricity supply in the Kathmandu Valley.

The authority said the existing conductors would be replaced with higher-capacity ones to increase the transmission line’s capacity and strengthen the power system. As a result, electricity supply in the Kathmandu Valley may be disrupted on Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11.

The 132 kV Transmission Line Upgrade Project, operated under the NEA’s Project Management Directorate, will replace the existing conductors on the Matatirtha-Syuchatar 132 kV double-circuit transmission line with higher-capacity conductors.

The transmission line will need to be shut down from 9 am to 5 pm on both days to carry out the work, the authority said.

The existing low-capacity conductors will be replaced with high-temperature low-sag (HTLS) conductors. Around 400 metres of conductor remain to be replaced on one circuit of the double-circuit line.

Once the work is completed, the transmission line’s electricity-carrying capacity is expected to increase, helping the authority manage growing electricity demand and improve the reliability of the power system.

Electricity supply may be affected in areas served by substations connected to the transmission line, including Matatirtha and Syuchatar, during the shutdown.

The authority said the necessary technical preparations had been made to complete the work within the scheduled timeframe. However, the schedule may change if weather conditions are unfavourable.
