A 27-year-old Nepali man, Sandeep Adhikari, has been charged over the death of a three-year-old girl who was struck by a car in Auburn, western Sydney.
Adhikari was arrested and charged with causing death by negligent driving. He has not yet entered a plea in court.
Adhikari appeared at Burwood Local Court on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the incident.
According to reports, several supporters were seen accompanying him as he left the court. He reportedly attempted to cover his face with a sheet of paper when approached by reporters.
Adhikari’s lawyer, Danny Ede, described the incident as “extremely tragic.”
“He is under a great deal of stress and is concerned about his family and their situation,” Ede told reporters.
How did the incident occur?
Emergency services were called to Normanby Road in Auburn at around 2 pm on Tuesday after reports that a car had struck the girl while she was playing in a driveway.
The girl, who was critically injured, was immediately taken to Westmead Hospital. She died several hours later.
Adhikari was not injured in the incident. He was taken to Auburn Hospital for mandatory testing before being taken to Auburn Police Station, where he was charged.
Adhikari is currently out on bail and has been ordered to appear in court again on October 27.
As the case is before the court, the allegations against Adhikari have not been proven.
