Kathmandu, September 15
Nepal and Micronesia formally established diplomatic relations on Monday, bringing to 185 the number of countries with which Nepal now maintains diplomatic ties.
The agreement was sealed through a joint statement signed by Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa, and Micronesia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jim S. Lipwe. During their bilateral meeting, both ambassadors discussed matters of mutual interest and committed to strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation, including within the UN and other multilateral forums.
Micronesia is a Pacific island nation made up of more than 600 small islands, located east of the Philippines and north of Papua New Guinea. It comprises four states, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae, with its capital, Palikir, located on Pohnpei. The country has a total land area of just 702 square kilometres, making it one of the smallest nations in the world (roughly 210 times smaller than Nepal), and a population of around 114,000. The United States is responsible for its defence and security.
