Kathmandu, September 13
The government has decided to provide financial assistance to families displaced by the devastating Bhotekoshi floods on August 26 until they are able to return to permanent homes.
According to Communications Minister Bikram Timilsina, Thursday’s Cabinet meeting decided to provide funds to cover rent and other essential expenses for flood-displaced families until permanent housing is constructed.
Under the decision, families of up to four members will receive Rs 15,000 per month. Each additional family member will receive an additional Rs 2,000 per month.
Families that do not wish to receive the rental assistance will have the option of receiving temporary housing arranged by the government until permanent homes are built, Timilsina said.
The government has already sent forms to all concerned local governments to collect the details of eligible families, the minister said in a social media post.
Reconstruction to follow detailed assessment
Timilsina said the government has completed the preliminary assessment of the damage and losses caused by the floods, while a detailed needs assessment is underway.
“Based on the assessment, the necessary resources will be secured and reconstruction and rehabilitation work will be expedited,” he said.
The Bhotekoshi floods displaced a large number of families and caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure in the affected areas.
