Kathmandu, September 10
The Nepali community living in the Blue Mountains region of New South Wales, Australia, has raised 1238660 (AUD $11,273) for families and communities affected by the recent devastating floods in Nepal.
The Blue Mountains Nepali Community, together with Blue Mountains Community, Katoomba locals, and the wider Nepali community, organised an evening fundraising event at a local hall in Katoomba. Volunteers cooked traditional Nepali dishes for attendees, while the event also featured Nepali music and cultural performances, offering local Australians a chance to connect with Nepali food, art, and culture.
The event drew around 200 people from both the local Australian and Nepali communities, far more than organisers had expected. Attendees enjoyed the food and music while generously donating to support flood victims back in Nepal.
The entire amount raised has been transferred to the Nepal government’s Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund to support relief and rescue operations for those affected by the floods.
Organisers said the event was more than just a fundraiser; it was a demonstration of how Nepalis abroad continue to hold on to their love, sense of responsibility, and unity toward their homeland. Many local Australians experienced Nepali food and culture for the first time, and the warmth and generosity toward flood victims thousands of kilometres away left a strong impression on the community, organisers said, adding that the event also helped strengthen ties between the Nepali and local Australian communities in the area.
The organisers extended their gratitude to everyone who attended, donated, volunteered in cooking and event management, performed, or contributed in any way to the event’s success, describing it as a collective achievement of the Blue Mountains community, Katoomba locals, and the Nepali diaspora working together.
