Kathmandu, August 27
Former Prime Minister Sushila Karki has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property caused by the devastating floods that swept through the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems.
In a statement, Karki expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and prayed for the safe rescue of people who remain missing following the disaster on August 26.
She said reports that a large number of people remain out of contact had caused further distress and expressed hope that search and rescue teams would be able to locate and safely rescue those missing.
Karki also wished for the speedy recovery and safety of those injured and affected by the disaster, while urging families waiting for news of their loved ones to remain patient and strong.
“None of you are alone in this hour of grief. This is not the sorrow of just one family, community or district. It is the shared pain of all Nepalis,” Karki said. She added that support and assistance should reach wherever the disaster has struck and called for everyone to stand together to overcome the crisis.
Karki praised the efforts of security personnel, flight crews, civil servants, health workers, teachers, elected representatives, volunteers, social workers and others involved in search, rescue, relief, treatment and rehabilitation efforts.
She also appealed to Nepalis at home and abroad to contribute according to their capacity to support affected families.
“Even if we have to cut back on our own meals, let us help,” she said, urging people to reduce some of their festival spending where possible and contribute to saving lives and helping affected families rebuild their lives.
Karki said solidarity during a disaster was one of the country’s greatest strengths and that assistance and unity shown today would help build hope for tomorrow.
She also expressed concern over reports of significant losses on the Chinese side of the border. Karki called for effective coordination and cooperation between the relevant mechanisms of Nepal and China to advance search, rescue and relief efforts.
