Baitadi, August 20
A landslide has been continuously occurring in the Ratapani settlement of Surnaya Rural Municipality-8 in Baitadi, putting the entire settlement at risk. Six families have already been displaced, while 19 other houses remain at risk.
Resident Tej Bohara said the landslide has been occurring continuously for the past week.
“The landslide has been occurring continuously. Twenty-five families are living in fear,” he said. “So far, six families have been displaced. The displaced families are taking shelter with their neighbours.”
The landslide has damaged maize crops planted across around 25 to 30 ropanis of land. It has also disrupted the movement of students and residents.
“Landslides occur almost every day, and it is frightening even to walk around. The fear increases whenever it rains,” said resident Ramsingh Bohara.
Surnaya Rural Municipality Chairperson Ammar Bahadur Kunwar said the Ratapani settlement, which is at high risk from landslides, needs to be relocated.
“The landslide has been troubling this area for a long time, and the situation has worsened recently,” he said. “There is no alternative to relocating the settlement. We are coordinating with the relevant authorities.”
