Senior otolaryngologist Dr Dhundiraj Paudel has been appointed chairperson of the Nepal Medical Council.
Health and Food Safety Minister Nisha Mehta appointed Dr Paudel to the post on Wednesday.
Dr Paudel previously served as chairperson of the Bharatpur Hospital Development Committee.
During his tenure, he had proposed developing Bharatpur Hospital as a teaching hospital and an institution capable of providing medical education.
He had also advocated for developing Bharatpur Hospital into an institution modeled on the National Academy of Medical Sciences, with its own legal foundation and without having to depend on other institutions.
Dr Paudel has also been vocal on issues related to health service improvement, management of government hospitals and medical education.
He has consistently emphasized strengthening the capacity of government hospitals and making medical education and healthcare delivery more effective.
As chairperson of the Nepal Medical Council, Dr Paudel will now be responsible for key areas including regulation of the medical profession, professional conduct of doctors and matters related to medical education.
