Ujyalo Nepal Party Chair Kulman Ghising has called for a serious review and reforms at the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), saying its profits are shrinking.

Ghising made the remarks in a Facebook post on Monday while extending his wishes to the NEA on the occasion of its 41st anniversary.

“The shrinking of the authority’s profit — from Rs 12 billion in fiscal year 2024/25 to only around Rs 5 billion in pre-tax profit in fiscal year 2025/26 — requires a serious review and improvement,” he wrote.

“However, the solution is not to weaken the authority, but to make it more capable, stronger, professional, transparent and accountable to the people.”

Ghising expressed confidence that the NEA would play an increasingly effective role in providing reliable electricity services, achieving energy self-sufficiency, expanding electricity exports and contributing to the national goal of building a prosperous Nepal.

He recalled how the authority, once known as an institution responsible for imposing load-shedding, transformed its identity after fiscal year 2015/16.

“From ending load-shedding to achieving almost 100 percent electrification, from becoming a net electricity exporter from a net importer, and from a loss-making institution to a profitable one making a significant contribution to the national economy, this journey is itself an inspiring story of transformation,” he wrote.

He described fiscal year 2015/16 as a “turning point” in Nepal’s energy history.

“Before that, there was a story of darkness, scarcity and losses; after that, a new chapter of light, confidence and possibilities began,” he wrote.

According to Ghising, the NEA’s transformation also demonstrates that public institutions are not merely a burden on the state.

“With capable leadership, honest management and clear objectives, public institutions can become strong drivers of national prosperity,” he wrote.
