The Nepal Army has conducted an aerial patrol in Sunsari after the security situation in Kaptanganj, Ward No. 3 of Devanaganj Rural Municipality, and surrounding areas became tense.
According to Nepal Army spokesperson and Assistant Rathi Rajaram Basnet, the aerial patrol was carried out to assess the security situation and monitor conditions on the ground. He said that, as of Wednesday, the situation in Sunsari remained peaceful.
Following the imposition of a curfew, the Nepal Army was deployed to assist with security operations. Basnet said that, in addition to ground patrols, the army also carried out aerial surveillance on Wednesday as part of its efforts to maintain law and order.
Meanwhile, the Nepal Police also used drones to assess the situation in Kaptanganj.
The unrest began after a dispute between two groups in Kaptanganj, Devanaganj Rural Municipality–3. During efforts by security personnel to bring the situation under control, 24-year-old Om Prakash Mehta of Kaptanganj was fatally shot on Sunday night.
According to security authorities, the clash broke out after one group refused to remove a flag while the other played loud music through a DJ sound system. They claim that warning shots were fired into the air to control the situation, during which one person died.
Tensions escalated after one person was killed and nine civilians were injured. The violence flared up again on Tuesday evening, with incidents of vandalism, arson, and clashes. However, authorities say that the situation in Sunsari is now gradually returning to normal.
