Foreign Employment Department digitises decades-old fraud case records

Kathmandu, June 28

The Department of Foreign Employment has accelerated the search, organisation, and digital archiving of thousands of foreign employment fraud case and investigation files that had remained stored away for nearly 25 years.

According to the department, the initiative was launched under the directive of the Minister for Youth, Labour and Employment, Ramji Yadav, and under the leadership of the Director General, Mira Acharya. The campaign aims to locate, classify, and systematically archive long-neglected case and investigation files that have remained unmanaged for years.

Following the promulgation of the Foreign Employment Act in 1985 (2042 BS), foreign employment-related affairs were handled by the Department of Labour. Later, with the establishment of the Department of Labour and Employment Promotion in 1999 (2056 BS), complaints and grievances from Nepali migrant workers began to be registered there. After the Department of Foreign Employment was established in 2007 (2064 BS), those responsibilities were transferred to the new department.

The department said that during the records management process, important case and investigation files dating back to 2000 (2057 BS) have been recovered. The physical archiving of thousands of files that had remained in storage for nearly 25 years has already been completed after they were retrieved and classified according to the year.

The department added that the scanning of the files and preparation of digital copies are progressing rapidly. It is also preparing to develop a digital tracking system to make case handling and investigation processes more efficient in the future.

The department plans to update the details of all available files dating back to 2000 in a digital system and integrate them into the judicial process. It expects the initiative to provide faster, more transparent, and more effective services to victims of foreign employment fraud who have been awaiting justice for many years.
