Two elephant tusks that were displayed on the walls of Sheetal Niwas, the President’s Office, have been found to have been stolen. Police have arrested several individuals in connection with the investigation.
The theft took place during the Gen Z protests on September 8 and 9, 2025, when the President’s Office, normally under 24-hour Nepal Army security, was also targeted. During the demonstrations, protesters vandalised and set fire to the presidential residence. The chair used by the President, photographs hung on the walls, and other items were burned and smashed. It was during this chaos that the two elephant tusks, which had been mounted on the walls as decorative pieces, were stolen.
Nearly nine months after the theft, police have now arrested six individuals along with the tusks. A team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office conducted an operation on Tuesday night in the New Bus Park and Manmaiju areas to make the arrests.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Santosh Khadka of the Crime Investigation Office confirmed the arrests.
“Our team has arrested those involved in the theft of the elephant tusks. We are continuing further investigation,” he said.
Police have not yet made the names of those arrested public. The arrested individuals are reported to have cut the stolen tusks into pieces and distributed them, keeping the portions as decorative items in their own homes.
