Kathmandu, April 7

Bird flu has been detected at 23 places in the month of Chaitra this year. Director General at Department of Livestock Services, Dr Umesh Dahal, confirmed this. The first case of bird-flu was detected on March 20 (Chaitra 6) for the first time in Sundarharaicha municipality and Urlabari municipality of Koshi Province.

Twelve places in Sunsari, seven in Morang, two in Jhapa, one in Chitwan and one in Kathmandu have recorded bird flu so far. A total of 104,000 domestic fowls were culled from these places to prevent the spread of the bird-flu. Bird-flu was detected on crow on the premises of Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, as well.

Dr Dahal added that import and export of fowls have been banned after bird flu was spread in Sunsari, Jhapa and Morang districts. The government destroys the flu-infected chicken and provides 75 per cent compensation to the farmers.
