UN to reduce peacekeeping quotas, but Nepal remains top contributor

Kathmandu, October 24

The United Nations is set to reduce the quota for soldiers deployed in peacekeeping missions.

The quota is expected to be cut by at least 25 per cent from the current level. Despite the reduction, the Nepali Army will continue to rank as the top contributor to UN peacekeeping missions, according to the Nepali Army.

Speaking at a recent press conference held at the Army Headquarters in Jangi Adda, Director General of the Directorate of Military Operations and Lieutenant General Anup Jung Thapa said the Nepali Army would still remain the leading contributor even after the quota reduction.

“It is natural for such a reduction to have direct or indirect impacts. However, the Nepali Army will continue to be the largest contributor,” said Lt. Gen. Thapa.

Currently, 5,820 Nepali soldiers, including 538 women, are deployed in 10 UN peacekeeping missions. So far, 74 Nepali soldiers have lost their lives and 75 have been injured while serving in peacekeeping missions.

Nepal ranks first among the countries contributing troops to UN peacekeeping operations and also leads in women’s participation.
