Shark Hem Raj Dhakal: A visionary entrepreneur fueling Nepal’s economic transformation

Kathmandu, June 20

In a country where dreams often outpace opportunities, Shark Tank Nepal has quickly become a catalyst for change. Broadcasting on Himalaya Television, the show has turned the spotlight on Nepal’s entrepreneurial energy, transforming it into a national movement. Adapted from the globally acclaimed Shark Tank franchise, this Nepali-language edition connects aspiring entrepreneurs with veteran investors—aptly known as “Sharks”—who are ready to back bold ideas with capital and mentorship.

More than just a television program, Shark Tank Nepal is a high-impact platform that is helping reshape Nepal’s startup ecosystem. It provides young and emerging business minds with the rare chance to present their innovations to a national audience and receive not only financial backing but also strategic guidance. With the country’s founders often struggling to access funding, networks, and visibility, the show offers an unparalleled launchpad.

What sets this show apart is its deep-rooted local relevance. While it mirrors an international format, it speaks directly to Nepali challenges, opportunities, and cultural values. From sustainable farming solutions and digital platforms to products designed for rural markets, the ideas showcased reflect the aspirations and creativity of Nepalis from all walks of life. Each pitch tells a personal story, and each deal inked represents a future being built in real-time.

Among the influential investors on the show is Hem Raj Dhakal, a first-generation serial entrepreneur and co-founder of the IME Group. His presence as a Shark adds depth and experience to the panel, inspiring contestants and viewers alike.

Born on November 24, 1975, in Baglung, Dhakal has been instrumental in institutionalising the remittance sector in Nepal. With his brother Chandra Prasad Dhakal, he co-founded IME, which revolutionised how Nepali migrant workers send money home. The company’s extensive payout network across Nepal has been vital in improving financial access for rural families.

Under Dhakal’s leadership, IME Group has grown into a diversified conglomerate operating in sectors such as banking, insurance, automobiles, energy, IT, tourism, and digital finance. Collectively, the group has created over 13,850 jobs—contributing significantly to Nepal’s economic landscape. Dhakal’s global experience includes over 15 years in Malaysia, where he expanded IME’s reach and executed mergers with institutions in countries like the USA, UK, Japan, and Malaysia.

An academic achiever, Dhakal earned a Master’s in Business Studies from Tribhuvan University, and sharpened his entrepreneurial insight at prestigious institutions like MIT, London Business School, and Harvard Business School.

Beyond business, Dhakal is actively involved in philanthropy. As a co-founder of the IME Foundation, he supports causes that promote education, innovation, and social inclusion. His investment in ventures like SastoDeal and Fusemachines further reflects his commitment to empowering the next generation of Nepali entrepreneurs.

For his contributions to Nepal’s economic development, Dhakal has been honored with the Suprabal Janasewashree by the Government of Nepal. As a Shark, he continues to champion innovation, embodying the essence of Shark Tank Nepal—where vision meets opportunity.
