Large quantity of gold seized in Rasuwa

Kathmandu, May 19

A large quantity of smuggled gold was seized in Rasuwa, according to police sources.

The District Police Office, Rasuwa, confirmed the gold was recovered during an anti-smuggling operation. Rasuwa Police Chief Hem Bahadur Shahi verified the seizure in a statement to Onlinekhabar, although he did not disclose the exact amount, stating that the gold is still being weighed.

This incident comes amid heightened surveillance by various law enforcement agencies following a recent surge in gold smuggling through Tribhuvan International Airport. While airport smugglers typically use returning migrant workers to bring in small quantities, the northern border routes—such as Rasuwa—have become key channels for smuggling gold in bulk, often by the kilogram.

Much of the smuggled gold that enters Nepal is believed to be destined for India, making Nepal a major transit hub in the regional smuggling network.
