Entrepreneurs oppose govt decision to promote foreign investment in agriculture

Agriculture entrepreneurs organise a press meet in Kathmandu, on Tuesday, January 5, 2020.

Kathmandu, January 5

Agriculture entrepreneurs have opposed the government’s recent decision to promote foreign investment in the country’s agriculture industry.

Organising a joint press meeting in Kathmandu on Tuesday, four organisations representing different parts of agriculture-based entrepreneurship said the decision to open the sector for unconditional foreign investment was against the farmers’ and domestic industrialists’ interests.

They have demanded that the government withdraw the decision as it would have a long-term adverse impact on the country’s economy.

The entrepreneurs argue the foreign investment would turn current entrepreneurs and traders into workers whereas the foreigners will reap benefits exploiting them.

They have complained that the government did not consult them before the decision although they have invested billions of rupees in the sector.
