Kathmandu, October 19

Following criticisms from the public and other stakeholders about federal parliament members receiving an amount equal to their monthly salary as a Dashain allowance, the ruling Nepal Communist Party and the main opposition Nepali Congress are preparing to deposit the money in the government’s Covid-19 response fund.

A meeting of the key parliamentary leaders from the NCP including Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli made a decision to deposit the money in the fund, informs NCP lawmaker Subas Chandra Nembang.

The main opposition party’s president Sher Bahadur Deuba has already directed lawmakers to refund the amount so as to spend that in the Covid-19 response.

Before this, some lawmakers individually had decided to return the allowance to the secretariat.

“We are also talking with the prime minister,” says Bhattarai.
