The main opposition party, Nepali Congress, has directed its lawmakers to refund the Dashain allowance they have received from the Federal Parliament Secretariat.

Owing to widespread criticism from various sectors that the lawmakers pocketed the allowance whereas the country is struggling to manage funds for the Covid-19 response, the party’s leader and former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba issued the directive on Monday.

“Now, we will act accordingly,” says the party’s chief whip in the House of Representatives, Bal Krishna Khand, “The party urges the government to spend this money in the Covid-19 control and treatment.”

Meanwhile, the party also protested the government decision to not bear the cost of coronavirus test and treatment of the public. Khand demanded that the decision be revoked.
