UML-Maoist merger: Both parties to discuss roadblocks internally

Chairmen of CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist Centre, KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal respectively, sign an agreement to unify their parties, in Kathmandu, on Monday, February 19, 2018.

Kathmandu, May 2

Upon failing to move ahead with interparty negotiations about key issues yet to be settled for their unification, both the CPN-UML and the CPN-Maoist Centre on Wednesday are discussing the roadblocks in internal meetings of their parties.

The UML has called its Standing Committee meeting for 6 pm today at Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar of Kathmandu. Likewise, the Maoist Centre’s Central Secretariat meeting is scheduled to begin at 11 am at the central office in Parisdanda.

Maoist Centre spokesperson Pampha Bhusal says the meeting has been called to figure out a meeting point for unification.

It has been learned that chairpersons of two parties–UML’s KP Sharma Oli and Maoist Centre’s Pushpa Kamal Dahal–will hold a meeting to discuss next steps in the unification on Thursday.

Earlier, the two parties had announced that they would announce the merger on April 22. After their failure to keep the promise, the parties have been unable to fix another date.
