Kathmandu, August 9

Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav on Tuesday asked the Prachanda-led government to introduce laws related to elections without delay so as to enable Election Commission to conduct elections — local, provincil and federal — on schedule. Yadav said the EC can conduct elections in Chait, 2073 (mid-March to mid-April 2017) if the report of the Restructuring Commission is out by mid-December, 2016 to mid-January, 2017 and electoral laws are in place.

Interacting with journalists and representatives of political parties in course of a two-day workshop on House of Representatives Election Draft Bill, Yadav said: For the EC to conduct elections in Push, 2073 (mid-November to mid-December, 2016), electoral laws should be ready by Srawan (mid-July to mid-August, 2016) .

Yadav said: The situation may change if the government presses for elections even in the event of delays in preparing the report on restructuring.

He said: Mere orders are not enough to conduct elections. Laws and logistics should also be in place.
