6 trending passions gaining popularity among Gen Z

Today’s younger generation has very different lifestyles, interests and forms of entertainment compared with previous generations. Although this generation has grown up with digital technology, smartphones and social media and spends a significant amount of time on screens, it is increasingly drawn to passions and activities that offer a break from screens while promoting mental peace, creativity, self-expression and social connections.

Social media, in particular, has played an important role in giving old hobbies a new and popular identity. Activities once associated with grandparents, such as knitting, crochet, baking and birdwatching, have now become “cool” and trending passions among young people. Likewise, gaming, digital art and music production bring technology and creativity together.

These passions are not merely ways to pass the time. Some can help reduce stress, improve concentration, develop new skills, expand social networks and even become sources of income in the future.

1. Birdwatching

Birdwatching, the activity of observing birds and identifying their species, is no longer limited to older generations. Young people are increasingly viewing it as an interesting way to connect with nature, practice photography, and learn new things.

Mobile apps and digital technology have made birdwatching easier. Various apps allow users to identify birds by their calls, record the location and time of sightings, and maintain records of the birds they have observed. Searching for different bird species has become an exciting experience for many young people, similar to a “real-life Pokémon hunt.” The excitement of photographing rare birds and keeping records of sightings has made the activity even more entertaining.

Young people often share photos and videos of birds they have captured on social media. This has also helped create online communities among people with similar interests. Another important aspect of birdwatching is that it can increase interest in nature conservation. Learning about different bird species and their habitats can encourage young people to become more interested in environmental protection.

2. Digital art and music production

Art and music have always been popular among young people. However, advances in digital technology have significantly changed how art is created and music is produced.

In the past, producing music required expensive studios and extensive equipment. Today, beats, music and digital art can be created with nothing more than a computer, tablet or smartphone. Young people are increasingly interested in digital illustration, graphic design, animation, photography, video editing and producing their own music. These activities give them opportunities to showcase their talents.

One of the biggest advantages of digital art and music production is that they can eventually be turned into careers in freelancing, content creation, design, music production and digital marketing. Social media has also provided a major platform for young creators. By posting their work online, they can reach audiences not only in their own countries but around the world.

3. Knitting, crochet and crafting

Once dismissed as “grandmothers’ work,” knitting and crochet are becoming popular again among young people. Making their own clothes, bags, hats, toys, home décor and accessories by hand is increasingly common.

Trends such as “granny-core,” inspired by the lifestyle, clothing, handicrafts and domestic skills of older generations, have made crochet and knitting even more popular among young people. Spending time crocheting with friends, learning handicrafts or organising “craft nights” has also become a fun social activity.

The popularity of crafting is also linked to the concept of sustainable fashion. Making things oneself instead of buying new products, reusing old clothes and choosing durable materials can help reduce waste. Crafting can also help develop patience, concentration, manual skills and creative thinking.

4. Home baking

Making cakes, cookies, bread and other baked goods at home is also becoming increasingly popular among young people. The process of making sourdough bread, in particular, has gained considerable attention on social media.

Young people share photos and videos documenting everything from their first attempts at making bread to their progress as they become better bakers. Sharing recipes, ingredient measurements and baking tips has turned the hobby into a popular form of online content.

Young people are not limited to traditional recipes. Fusion baking, which combines different flavours, as well as healthier baking using less sugar and ingredients such as fruits, nuts and whole grains, is also gaining popularity. Home baking can develop creativity, patience and cooking skills while potentially providing a foundation for starting a small business.

5. Jigsaw puzzles and gaming

Gaming was once viewed mainly as a form of entertainment or a way to pass the time. Today, however, the gaming world is much broader. Strategy, puzzle, competitive and cooperative games offer young people both challenges and entertainment. Jigsaw puzzles are also making a comeback among the younger generation. Activities such as “puzzle and chill,” popular on social media, are encouraging people to sit together in groups and solve puzzles.

Although digital gaming is screen-based, activities such as jigsaw puzzles provide an opportunity to spend some time away from digital devices. Solving puzzles encourages concentration, problem-solving and patience.

Online gaming can bring people from different parts of the world together in a single community. Playing with friends, livestreaming and participating in gaming communities are creating new forms of social interaction. However, time management and balance are important when gaming. Spending long periods continuously in front of a screen can affect daily life, sleep, studies or work, so entertainment should be kept in balance.

6. Desire to step outside the digital world

Young people who spend significant amounts of time in the digital world are also becoming interested in activities that bring them closer to nature. Hiking, camping, nature walks, gardening and outdoor photography are some examples. Spending some time in nature after being constantly engaged with mobile phones, social media and online activities can provide young people with a digital break. Hiking or camping with friends can be entertaining while also strengthening social bonds.

Young people often share photos and videos from their hikes, trips and camping experiences on social media. This helps spread information about new places while also connecting people with similar interests.

Why are young people’s passions changing?

Social media and digital technology are major factors behind the changes in Gen Z’s interests. A hobby no longer needs television or magazines to become popular. Once a video of an activity goes viral on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube or another platform, the number of young people following the trend can increase rapidly.

At the same time, an interest in self-expression, creativity and personal identity has encouraged young people to explore new passions. The younger generation no longer sees hobbies simply as activities to pursue during free time. For many, they are also ways to learn new skills, connect with like-minded people and explore future income opportunities.

The growing popularity of these passions among Gen Z reflects an important shift. Young people are not trying to escape technology; rather, they are seeking balance in their lives alongside technology. Birdwatching connects them with nature, crafting encourages creativity, baking develops practical skills, digital art provides opportunities to showcase talent, puzzles and gaming offer both entertainment and challenges, while hiking and camping strengthen their connection with the natural world.

These passions, therefore, are not merely trends. When pursued in the right way, they can contribute to skill development, mental relaxation, social connections, confidence and new career opportunities. By combining traditional hobbies with modern technology and new ideas, Gen Z is reshaping the way people approach leisure and entertainment.
