50 Biplav Maoist leaders, cadres under police net in Nepal Capital

Kathmandu, November 13

Police in Kathmandu have arrested more than 50 cadres and leaders of the Biplav-led CPN-Maoist, which had announced a nationwide strike for Sunday.

The arrestees include Omprakash Pun, a politburo member of the party. While police arrested Pun at Ratnapark on Sunday morning, they arrested seven others, including Jhakbahadur Malla, chair of National Youth Volunteers’ Bureau, from Koteshwor and Purna Singh, chair of the party-aligned ANNISU-R, vice-chair Lalbahadur Tamang and Dipendra Chalaune from Kalanki. The Maoist party informed that police arrested student leaders, including Chandra Budha, from Balaju.

Others arrested from Kalanki include Saroj Bhandari, Krishna Shahi, Mahendra Tamang, Surya Bhujel and Jivan Lama.

According to a Maoist leader, police raided Kalanki-based Hotel Adventure at 11 pm and arrested nine party activists, including Jivan Lama. The Maoist party had announced the nationwide shutdown calling for the fulfillment of a host of demands, including food sovereignty.
