Kathmandu, November 20
A total of 35 Nepali nationals deported from the United States have arrived in Kathmandu.
According to SSP Krishna Pangeni of the Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau, most of those deported had travelled through illegal channels. One individual, however, had gone on a student visa.
Pangeni said the student was deported after it was found that he had failed to renew his college enrollment and was working in violation of his visa conditions. Another individual who had travelled on a visit visa was deported after being arrested for taking up employment.
The remaining 33 individuals had reached the US through illegal routes. It has been found that each of them paid up to Rs 8 million to traffickers. Even after entering through various countries and staying for up to two years, US authorities eventually deported them.
Police said most of those deported were from the Rukum and Dang regions. Those who returned have declined to file complaints.
After being elected US president, Donald Trump adopted a strict stance towards undocumented immigrants, launching a campaign to deport individuals residing illegally in the country.
Since Trump assumed office, more than 200 Nepalis have been deported from the US.
