Skoda has launched its popular sedan, the Skoda Slavia in Nepal. Skoda, the European car manufacturer, developed this car in India, and it stands out as the safest vehicle, boasting a five-star Global NCAP rating in both the adult and child safety segments.

Since its introduction in November 2021 in India, the sedan has experienced a substantial surge in popularity. This model has taken the place of the well-loved Skoda Rapid. Notably, the sedan features a high ground clearance, resembling that of an SUV.

Design and Build

Exterior

The Skoda Slavia is based on the same platform as the Skoda Kushaq. Sedans might be a hassle with less ground clearance, but the Slavia has a ground clearance of 179mm which is almost similar to many of the SUVs. The overall look and design of the sedan are also striking and give a road presence with modern looks.

Its bold front grille, highlighted by chrome accents highlights Skoda’s iconic look. The front bumper is also wide with aerodynamic lines which increase the performance.

The LED headlights feature L-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs) which add to the finish and looks. The headlights are quite bright and the fog lights just below them also serve their purpose quite well. The indicators on the other hand are not LED and traditional bulbs.

The sleek LED tail lamps, inspired by Czech design, add a modern touch to the car’s rear, setting it apart from others. On the side, it is quite sporty with the doors opening at a wide angle making it easy to get in or out.

Interior

The Skoda Slavia has a luxurious design within its price segment. The accents and details are impressive, although the dashboard features hard plastic. The interior colour, a mix of Stone Beige and Black Luxe, enhances the overall aesthetics with its premium dual-tone appearance. Despite the hard plastic dash, the interior has ambient lighting and chrome bezel air vents, adding to the premium feel and experience.

On the front, the steering is Electro-Mechanical Steering (Power Assisted). It can be adjusted for tilt and telescopic reach which means you can adjust the steering wheel in four ways which is up, down, forward and backward. The steering wheel also has buttons for functions such as volume controls, voice control, phone and cruise control.

The Skoda Slavia has a 20.32cm digital instrument cluster which is bright and displays information such as speed, RPM, fuel level, distance covered, trip meter, turn signal indicators, door ajar warning, tyre pressure warning, fuel consumption and high beam indicators. The cluster can also be configured to different themes such as classic or sporty and the brightness can also be adjusted.

The infotainment system on the Skoda Slavia is a 25.4cm touchscreen which is smooth and responsive and has many functions and features such as navigation, music, phone, settings and voice control. It has both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which allows users to connect their smartphone to the car.

The climate control of the Skoda Slavia is just below the AC vents which are touch and do not have physical buttons. It has several systems such as auto, max and heating. Below the climate control system, there are two USB-C type ports to charge your smartphone or connect them to the infotainment system. There is also a wireless charger below the AC control.

The centre console consists of the gearbox. The type of the gearbox differs according to the transmission of the car whether it is manual or automatic. There is also decent storage which can be used to put important on-the-go items for the front.

The front seats on the Skoda Slavia are ventilated black leather seats with a perforated beige design that handles all kinds of weather for comfort. The driver seat is manually adjustable with both the driver and passenger with adjustable headrests.

On the rear, the sedan has three seats with the middle seat also able to fold down and has an armrest and two cup holders. The rear seats also have adjustable headrests. The rear also has AC vents for more comfort along with two USB-C ports to charge your phones. The back of the front seats has phone holders which makes it easy for rear passengers to keep their phone there while charging and not on the floor or hold it while charging.

The boot space of the Skoda Slavia is also good with 520 litres with the rear seats unfolded and about 1,050 litres when the rear seats are folded down. The storage on the door bins is also big which can easily fit one litre bottle.

Performance

The Skoda Slavia has a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with three cylinders and a displacement of 999 cc, delivering a maximum power of 85 kW at 5,000-5,500 rpm and a torque of 178 Nm at 1,750-4,500 rpm.

With a fuel tank of 45 litres, the mileage stands at 19.47 kmpl for manual transmission and 18.07 kmpl for the automatic variant. Operating as a front wheel drive, the manual transmission employs a dry single plate clutch, while the automatic transmission utilizes a hydro dynamic torque converter.

Brakes, Suspension and Tyres

The Skoda Slavia features a hydraulic diagonal split vacuum-assisted braking system, with disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. Its suspension system comprises a McPherson suspension with lower triangular links and a stabilizer bar at the front whereas at the rear, it has a twist-beam axle suspension setup.

The sedan rides on 195/65R15 tires for the Active variant and larger 205/55R16 tires for the Ambition and Style models. Depending on the trim, it offers steel wheels of size 6J x 15″ for the active version and alloy wheels of size 6J x 16″ for the ambition and style trims.

Safety and Features

The Skoda Slavia has received a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP for both adults and children. It is the safest car with many other safety features making it a perfect family car.

Active safety features like anti-lock brakes (ABS) help drivers keep control during hard braking, while the electronic stability program (ESP) prevents skidding or loss of control. It also has a hill-start assist to prevent rolling back on hills and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). It has passive safety features like six airbags, including frontal, side, and curtain airbags, along with three-point seatbelts for everyone inside. The car’s body structure is built to absorb impact in case of an accident, while ISOFIX child seat anchors make it easy to install child seats securely.

Speed-sensing door locks automatically secure the doors at higher speeds, and reverse parking sensors help avoid collisions while backing up. The car also has an overspeed warning system to alert drivers if they are going over the speed limit and an engine immobiliser that adds security by preventing theft.
