Kathmandu, May 13

Rabindra Mishra-led Sajha Bibeksheel Party has accused the government of trying to control media so that it can cover up its failure.

Organising a press conference in Kathmandu on Monday, the party demanded that the government withdraw the Media Council Bill it recently registered in Parliament, claiming it would put media under the government control,

The party claimed the government resorted to efforts to hide truth as its performance in past one and half years was unpopular.

“In the context that the government’s performance so far has been too hopeless, infamous and unpopular, the government wants to cover up its failure,” the party said, “The governments which fail to control corruption and bad governance try to control media all the time.”

Earlier on Sunday, the main opposition Nepali Congress had said the bill was introduced to carry out a coup against media.
