Nepal mulling over utilising ‘social remittances’ earned by foreign employment returnees

Kathmandu, August 16

For the first time, the government of Nepal has begun keeping records of the citizens who returned home after working abroad.

The government has been consistently keeping records of people going abroad for jobs; but it did not have any record of people returning home after work. Stakeholders were insisting that such date would also be significant to develop employment policies for the country.

They say those returning home from foreign jobs can be mobilised to generate self employment opportunities for youth here as they have many skills and ideas which function as social remittances.

“We should not explain how important the remittance to be sent by these workers is,” an official at the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security says, “Their skills and experiences are more valuable than the remittance. The state is concerned about them so as to create an conducive environment to properly utilise them.”

The Ministry has developed an online system to keep records of foreign employment returnees.

Minister Gokarna Bista says the system will be launched within next 10 days.

“We will put all information including personal details, passport number, their employment companies, their job, their work duration, salary and benefits in such a way that they can be traced with a single click,” Bista says, “Similar system will be followed for those returning home as well.”
