Doctors shut all hospital departments except emergency across Nepal

Visitors read a notice about the closing of various departments at the Civil Service Hospital, in Kathmandu, on Friday, September 22, 2017.

Kathmandu, September 22

Protesting the government decision to make doctors liable for any loss their negligence causes to patients during medical treatments, doctors have shut all hospitals of the country today except emergency departments.

Nepal Medical Association has called the strike, forcing patients visiting hospitals, nursing homes and clinics to return home empty-handed.

Earlier, the Association had also served a three-day ultimatum to the government calling to withdraw the decision. After the government did not heed their demand, the umbrella organisation of Nepali medical doctors resorted to the protests.

The Association has put forward other two demands including an amendment to the Act Relating to the Security of Health Workers and Health Institutions and implementation of past agreements signed with the government.
