Wild elephant rampage on Pathlaiya–Nijgadh road claims truck driver’s life

Kathmandu, November 10

A wild elephant has terrorised the Pathlaiya–Nijgadh section of the East–West Highway in Bara district, killing a truck driver on Monday morning.

According to police, the elephant had been spotted in Jitpursimara Sub-Metropolitan City–16 since Sunday evening, creating panic among locals and travelers.

At around 8 am Monday, the elephant attacked a truck (registration number Na 4 Kha 1830). The driver, identified as 40-year-old Rajkumar Chaudhary of Jitpursimara–1, was killed on the spot while trying to jump from the vehicle to escape.

Authorities had earlier urged motorists to use alternative routes after the elephant’s presence caused widespread fear along the highway. However, some drivers ignored the warning, leading to the fatal incident, police said.

The elephant rampaged through the stretch between Piluwa and Nijgadh, disrupting traffic along the major highway. Police have deployed teams with trained elephants from Bara and Chitwan to drive the wild elephant away. Following the operation, vehicle movement along the East–West Highway resumed around 12:30 pm, according to Bara Police.
